Sergeant John Stuart Murrow
John Stuart Murrow was born on 7 December 1895 (with his twin sister Ellen) at Ballydoogan, Sligo, the first of six children of English-born land agent Benjamin Murrow and his wife Jane Yates Murrow (née Stuart). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Teeling Street, Sligo East, with his parents and siblings.
Murrow enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 5 October 1914 (No.1268 – later Corps of Hussars No.71312). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France on 2 June 1915 with a reinforcement draft for A, C and D Squadrons. Later that month he was admitted to hospital with a hernia.
Little more is known about Murrow's service. At some point late in the war he may have been attached to a yeomanry regiment. On 11 August 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
On 6 June 1922 Murrow married Isobel Bailey Young in Antrim. They then lived in Sligo, where Murrow worked as an estate agent. He died at Chapel Street, Sligo, on 28 March 1968.
